The impossible claim

The Pompeii worm lives on deep-sea vent chimneys at ~2.6 km depth: its tail can sit in tube water measured near 80°C while its head stays in cool seawater — one worm, two climates.

The verified facts

The Pompeii worm (Alvinella pompejana) lives on active hydrothermal-vent chimneys along the East Pacific Rise — one of the most heat-tolerant complex animals known:

  • Where: ~2,600–2,650 m deep, on vent chimney walls and black smokers (Parigo / 13°N vent fields)
  • The two ends: its tube’s rear section was measured near 80°C while the head-end sits in cool seawater (~22°C) — a steep gradient along a single worm’s body (Chevaldonné et al.; Univ. of Delaware vent surveys)
  • The honest caveat: the 80°C figure is the TUBE environment; live-animal experiments (Ruelas et al. 2014) show sustained 50–55°C exposure damages or kills the worm — its verified physiological optimum sits above 42°C, not at 80
  • The fleece: its back carries a dense coat of filamentous bacteria — likely mutualistic, associated with the worm’s sulfide-rich environment and possibly a nutrition/detox partner
  • Self-built home: it cements a protein-and-mineral tube directly onto the vent wall (up to ~2 cm diameter), positioning itself in the thermal gradient
  • Stress biology: it induces HSP70 heat-shock proteins under thermal stress — studied as a model for heat tolerance

For comparison, the Sahara desert ant (Cataglyphis) tops out at a ~55°C critical body temperature. It’s complicated — but few animals live their whole lives between two extremes like this worm.
