The impossible claim
The pistol shrimp snaps its claw so fast the water boils — and the collapsing cavitation bubble hits an estimated ~4,500 K, close to the sun’s surface temperature of ~5,800 K.
The verified facts
A shrimp the size of your thumb fires the hottest shot in the ocean — measured in high-speed imaging experiments, not marine folklore:
- The snap: a spring-loaded snapper claw latches, stores elastic energy, then closes explosively — firing a water jet at roughly 25–32 m/s (90–115 km/h) (Versluis et al. 2000, Science; Kou et al. 2017)
- The bubble: the jet tears a low-pressure cavitation bubble that collapses in microseconds; the interior reaches an estimated ~4,500 K (≈4,200 °C) — approaching the sun’s surface (~5,800 K). The collapse even emits a tiny flash of light (sonoluminescence)
- The weapon is the shockwave, not the claw: the pressure pulse stuns or kills small prey at a distance — the shrimp itself never touches them
- Loud: individual snaps reach ~210–218 dB underwater; dense colonies make a reef crackle like sizzling bacon, and snapping-shrimp noise genuinely interferes with sonar and hydrophones
- The claw can flip sides: lose the big snapper and the other minor claw transforms into the new snapper, while the regrown limb becomes the pincer
- Symbiosis: many species share a burrow with a goby fish — the shrimp (with limited vision) digs and maintains the burrow while keeping antennae contact with the goby, which serves as the lookout
