The impossible claim

The peregrine falcon’s hunting dive exceeds 320 km/h — and one trained bird was reportedly timed at 389 km/h (242 mph): faster than a Formula 1 car.

The verified facts

In its hunting dive — the stoop — the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) is the fastest animal alive:

  • The verified figure: over 320 km/h (200 mph) in a full stoop, supported by peer-reviewed aerodynamic work (Tucker 1998 modeled falcon diving flight; later studies confirmed the folded-wing low-drag profile)
  • The headline number: 389 km/h (242 mph) — Ken Franklin’s trained falcon ‘Frightful’, measured with a tail-mounted barometric data logger plus timing calculations (NOT radar); Guinness lists it as ‘reportedly clocked’ — an experimental maximum, not a replicated wild-bird record
  • The shape: wings fold tight along the body into a teardrop; tail and wing position modulate drag through the dive (PLOS ONE aerodynamics studies)
  • Eyes: a transparent third eyelid — the nictitating membrane — sweeps across the eye to protect it at speed
  • Breathing: small bony tubercles inside the nostrils are thought to help regulate the airflow into the respiratory system at dive speeds
  • The strike: it knocks prey out of the air with a foot or wingstrike at the bottom of the stoop — no reliable peer-reviewed strike-force number exists, so forget the ‘bullet impact’ claims
  • Comparisons: cheetah ~100–120 km/h (ground sprint); F1 car ~360 km/h (fastest straights) — different measurement types, but the falcon tops both
  • Urban life: peregrines now nest on skyscrapers and bridges — cliff replacements — and are among the most wide-ranging raptors on Earth

Size: 34–58 cm long, 74–120 cm wingspan; females (~0.9–1.5 kg) outweigh males (~0.7–1.0 kg).
