The impossible claim
This animal can never eat. The adult luna moth has no mouth — it lives its entire adult life on fuel stored as a caterpillar.
The verified facts
The luna moth (Actias luna) undergoes one of nature’s most extreme trade-offs:
- As a caterpillar, it eats almost constantly — walnut, sweetgum and hickory leaves — storing energy for a life stage during which it will never eat again
- When it pupates, its chewing mouthparts are dissolved and rebuilt into a coiled proboscis… except in luna moths the adult mouthparts are vestigial or absent entirely — the digestive tract is non-functional
- Adults live 7–10 days, burning only the fat stored during the caterpillar stage, doing nothing but flying, mating, and laying eggs
- Its feathery antennae can detect a female’s pheromones kilometers away — the whole adult life is a race to mate before the fuel runs out
- The long hindwing tails aren’t decoration: they jam bat echolocation, redirecting attack strikes toward the disposable tail instead of the body
