The impossible claim
This beetle mixes two chemicals inside its body, boils them to ~100°C, and fires the result at its attacker — in rapid pulses.
The verified facts
Bombardier beetles (Brachinus and relatives) keep hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide in separate reservoirs. When threatened, both are delivered into a reaction chamber with catalases and peroxidases — the exothermic reaction heats the mixture to around 100°C and the beetle sprays it in a rhythmic pulsed jet (up to ~500 pulses per second) with remarkable aim, even around bends.
- The explosion chamber’s inlet valve acts as a one-way flash arrestor — the beetle never blows itself up
- The spray deters frogs, birds, and other predators; a grabbed beetle can fire at the attacker’s mouth from inside it
- The pulse mechanism inspired research into fuel-injection systems
