The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) has one of the largest wing surfaces of any insect — wingspans up to 27 cm — and one of the strangest life stories: its adult mouth is vestigial.

• Adults cannot eat or drink; they live 1–2 weeks on fat stored as a caterpillar, which consumed 57,000× its birth weight in leaves
• Its wingtips mimic snake heads — a startle defense against birds
• Males use feathered antennae to smell a female from kilometers away
