The impossible claim
The archerfish shoots its dinner — a pulsed jet of water that knocks insects off leaves up to 2–3 m above the surface, aimed through bent light.
The verified facts
The banded archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) is the only fish with a built-in water pistol, and its shot is physics, not luck:
- The jet: a pressurized blast from the mouth hits insects 2–3 m above the water; museum and biodiversity references back the 3 m figure (larger claims are unverified)
- It’s a pulse cluster, not a blob: the jet is hydrodynamically unstable — water released later catches up with the front, concentrating momentum at impact (PLOS ONE); impact force is estimated around ~200 mN, roughly 5x a small insect’s grip
- Aiming through bent light: the eyes stay underwater while the jet crosses into air; the fish corrects light refraction through learned visuomotor adaptation — it adjusts its aim rather than shooting at the apparent target (eLife)
- Rotating eyes: archerfish eyes swivel in their sockets so target view stays steady as the body angle changes
- Variable range, adjustable shot: for distant targets it delays the jet and opens the mouth more gradually (experiments at 20 cm vs 60 cm)
- Size: roughly 15–20 cm, large individuals ~30 cm
It’s also one of the few fish shown to discriminate quantities of dots in lab tests — 5 vs 8, 6 vs 9 — after ruling out size and area cues.
